The story

From exam room to enterprise

A life in medicine, from a father’s example to the companies built on it.

01

Roots

Medicine runs back generations in the Dent family. In seventeenth-century Cambridge, his ancestor Peter Dent worked as a physician and naturalist alongside John Ray. His great-great-grandfather served as a surgeon during the Civil War, caring for the wounded in one of the hardest periods in American medicine. His father, an OB/GYN in a small South Georgia town, died at 38 when Dr. Dent was ten, and that example led him into medicine. He grew up partly overseas, in Saudi Arabia and South America, and spent two years at Asheville School in North Carolina before college.

02

Practice

In 1996 he opened a solo OB/GYN practice in Naples, Florida, later Naples Women’s Center [confirm: same entity], focused on high-risk obstetrics and minimally invasive surgery [confirm: surgery wording]. His surgical work spanned robotic, minimally invasive and pelvic reconstructive surgery, as well as operative obstetrics. The practice joined HealthLynked in 2014.

03

Ventures

He started NeoGenomics from scratch as the human genome was being mapped, beginning with three employees in Naples, and served as its founding chairman and CEO. The company went on to focus on cancer diagnostics. In 2014 he founded HealthLynked, where he serves as Chairman and CEO, building one connected network that brings patients and their doctors together.
